Rob Gollan – Director

Land Based Training Limited has been managed by Rob Gollan since it was formed in 1996.

Rob has an enormous history in agricultural starting out at Lincoln University and receiving a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. Since then he has worked for MAF and then in 1987 formed his own Farm Consultancy Company in Whanganui. Rob Gollan Farm Consultancy employs five staff, three of which are involved with the administration for Land Based Training Ltd.

Rob contributes his time and experience in farming to the trainees with classroom and on farm visits. He also uses his years of Management experience and strong relationships with his staff to continue moving Land Based Training forward.

Jeremy Higgie – Director

A former Field Officer, Jeremy Higgie is also the Director of the company.

Jeremy purchased his family sheep / beef farm of 1250 acres in 1987. Since then he has been in the agricultural training industry with courses such as R.E.A.P in conjunction with his own farm.

Jeremy also founded and became Director of Ag Challenge, which is another Agricultural Training Institute here in Whanganui.

Tim Snape – Operations Manager (South)

Tim joined Land Based Training in May 2018 and is responsible for programmes, tutors and field staff in Whanganui across to Hawkes Bay and as far south as Christchurch. Teams across this region deliver programmes in Agriculture, Apiculture, Building, Civil Infrastructure, Intensive Literacy and Numeracy, Horticulture, and Pest Control.

Tim is a Chef by profession and started his Tertiary Education career in 1994 teaching Professional Cookery at Waikato Institute of Technology in Hamilton and then at UCOL in Whanganui. Over the past 10 years Tim has worked in various management roles both in the public and private sectors of the Tertiary Education Industry.

Whanganui is Tim’s home base and he enjoys the lifestyle that the city has to offer. In his spare time you’ll find him either in his garden or down the beach fishing.

Linda Weterman – Operations Manager (North)

Linda leads our teams of tutors and field staff from Hawera – Ohakune – Waiouru – Rotorua – Opotiki across to as far north as Kaitaia. Teams across this region deliver programmes in Agriculture, Apiculture, Building, Civil Infrastructure, Intensive Literacy and Numeracy, Horticulture, and Pest Control and Monitoring.

Linda has extensive experience in the tertiary education sector and has spent the last 30 years working in and supporting lifelong learning and strengths-based leadership. Some of Linda’s roles over that period include Auditing, Tutoring and Facilitation (Management, Internal Auditing, Accounting and Project Management, Governance), Learning Systems Management, Educational Leadership, CE of YMCA for the Greater Wellington region and CE Distance Division at Aspire2.

She lives with her husband (Frank) in Ngāmotu, New Plymouth and they enjoy cycling along the coastal track and fishing when they can. She is also a volunteer for Business Mentors in Taranaki and is a Hospice Taranaki Biographer.

Derek Priest – Head of School (Agriculture)

Derek joined Land based Training at its inception in 1996. After working for MAF, up the Waitotara Valley as a shepherd general and farm owner on the Parapara hills, he focused his passion for livestock farming to future farmers. Derek presently tutors level 3, 4 and 5 programs at the Otiwhiti Land Based Training Agricultural Facility inland from Hunterville. He has also been involved with agricultural training in both the Sichuan Province in China and Botswana.

Time out for him is on a 4 ha block at Fordell Whanganui where he enjoys trying new farming ideas and farming a handful of sheep and cattle.

Mandy Stevenson – Head of School (Apiculture)

Mandy has been with Land Based Training since 2018. She has a background in commercial beekeeping which she worked in for 5 years prior to starting with LBT.

Currently Mandy is a tutor for Apiculture Level 3 in the Ruapahu region alongside her role as Head of School.

When she has some downtime Mandy spends a lot of time out in the bush and snowboarding as home for her is the base of the beautiful Mt Ruapehu.

Shayne Hill – Academic and Compliance Manager

Shayne joined Land Based Training in April 2019 and is responsible for developing our programmes, quality assuring our delivery and managing compliance requirements.

Shayne was a Joiner/Builder by profession and started his Tertiary Education career in 2000 as head of department as well as teaching furniture making in Te Aroha for 5 years. He then continued his tertiary education journey as head of department alongside teaching carpentry in Whanganui for 9 years before moving into the QA space as Quality Manager for a PTE in Levin for 5 years – this all brought him to his current role with Land Based Training.

Mangaweka area is home base for Shayne and he enjoys the lifestyle that country living provides.
