Am I eligible for Fees Free?

Our Level 3–5 programmes may be eligible for Fees Free under the government’s final year fees free scheme. This means you’ll pay your fees upfront to Land Based Training, and if you’re eligible, you can receive a refund through Inland Revenue after you complete your study. Eligibility depends on your previous study and training history.

Introduction to Primary Industry Skills (Agriculture)
Level 226 Weeks

This course is available for free!*

If you enjoy working outdoors and want to build practical skills, this course is a great first step into primary industries careers with a focus on the agriculture and horticulture sector. You’ll learn how primary industry workplaces operate, how to use tools and equipment safely, and how to complete real tasks in farming and growing environments.

Whether you’re looking to start a career, build practical skills, or try something new, this course gives you a solid foundation across both agriculture and horticulture environments.

Learning is practical and hands-on, with time spent in real or simulated environments such as farms, orchards, nurseries, and gardens. You’ll take part in real-world tasks that help you understand how primary industry workplaces operate, how to use tools and equipment safely, and how to follow instructions on-site.

You’ll also have opportunities to apply your skills in real-life scenarios and community-based projects, giving you valuable experience you can take into the workforce or into further study in Farming systems or horticulture.

This programme is for people who have an interest in growing their confidence and capability in farming and have regular access to a practical farm environment. You’ll develop practical skills in farm systems, livestock production, technology, sustainability, and risk management, helping you step into roles with greater responsibility.

You’ll build on your existing farming skills and prepare for greater responsibility on farm. This programme focuses on coordinating farm activities, using technology, and supporting livestock and farm performance, leading to the New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Level 4) and progression into junior management roles.

This programme prepares you to work as an assistant beekeeper or manage your own hives with confidence while earning your New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture (Level 3). You’ll learn the practical skills needed to work with bees and beehives, including hive management, honey production, pest and disease control, and safe use of apiculture equipment.
