Project Description

This programme is designed to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge required to carry out carpentry and/or roofing projects in a construction environment.

Learners within the Carpentry strand will gain skills which include identifying and controlling carpentry related hazards, communication skills, plan reading, performing carpentry construction calculations, using carpentry industry terminology, using carpentry hand and power tools, understanding carpentry material properties, installation processes and carpentry construction techniques.

Learners within the 60 credit Roofing strand will gain skills which include identifying and controlling roofing hazards, working at heights, communication skills, plan reading, performing roofing construction calculations, using roofing industry terminology, using roofing hand tools, understanding roofing material properties, installation processes and roofing construction techniques.

Outcome Statement

Graduates of this programme will be able to:

  • Work safely and in accordance with compliance regulatory requirements in the construction trades sector.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and customers within the construction industry
  • Read and use specifications and drawings to complete simple construction projects.
  • Perform simple calculations to complete a range of familiar tasks in the construction sector

Graduates of the Carpentry strand will also be able to:

  • Understand and apply specific carpentry terminology and concepts such as line, level, square, plum when carrying out carpentry work in a project environment.
  • Understand basic building terminology, the properties of timber, concrete, steel and composite products, interior and exterior linings, and fixings, and apply this knowledge to carpentry projects.
  • Use construction and installation processes and techniques while carrying out carpentry projects
  • Carry out assigned carpentry work in a project environment.

Graduates of the Allied Trades strand will also be able to:

  • Apply generic construction industry terminology and display job role and inter-relationship knowledge while carrying out allied trades tasks.
  • Identify and correctly use hand tools and materials to complete familiar tasks in the allied trades.
  • Carry out assigned project work for allied trades.

Education Pathways:

On completion of the Carpentry strand programme, students may progress on to the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4).

On completion of the Allied Trades strand programme, students may progress on to the  New Zealand Certificate in Roofing (Level 4).

Employment Pathways:

Graduates of this qualification will be able to enter employment in trades within the construction industry as a labourer or an apprentice. With additional training and/or experience they may go on to further roles in the construction industry such as carpenter or roofer.

  • Full-Time 20 Weeks (Allied Trades Strand)
  • Part-Time 40 Weeks (Allied Trades Strand)

Entry Criteria

Academic Achievement

Applicants should demonstrate an ability to succeed in tertiary study, shown by the completion of any of the following qualifications or courses of study:

  • Attained NCEA L1 and/or
  • Attained a pre-trade construction related qualification at level 2.

English Second Language Students

Applicants whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools or other teaching institutions is not English, require an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 5.5 or above (or equivalent) for enrolment.

Life Skills/Work Experience

Applicants who do not meet the academic entry criteria above may be admitted to the programme/course of study if they are able to demonstrate:

  • Minimum of 1yr within the building and construction sector

Selection Criteria

All applicants will be required to meet with the tutor or field officer of the programme they are applying for prior to starting – this will be an informal conversation which will include covering the programme expectations and getting a better understanding of suitability for the programme.  Where there are more applicants than places available or the programme is not the best fit, a waiting list will be kept or our team will work with you to provide a suitable alternative. On completion of this conversation the tutor will assist with filling in the full application form to move into the next part of the enrolment process.
